A monthly platform created by Harare arts organisation Pamberi Trust for poets to express themselves in the spoken word and for poetry-lovers to enjoy.

The theme for this month's slam is "The Zimbabwean Renaissance", inviting poets to express their thoughts on the rebirth of Zimbabwe, and inspire people to dream of and work towards a nation of unity, democracy, peace and stability, with no discrimination against gender, race, religion, age or political affiliation.

The House of Hunger Poetry Slam is a monthly event that has grown to become a home for poets at the popular Fife Avenue venue. Since 2005 it has provided the best platform in Zimbabwe for poets from all walks of life. Performance skills have been shaped and sharpened by performances at the poetry slam, and several poets who started out with slam have grown to bigger stages, including some of the top annual festivals in the country including Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA), The Chimanimani Arts Festival, the International Images Film Festival and the Nguva Yedu/Thuba Lethu Youth Festival.

In August poets traveled to the Swaziland capital to participate in The Bushfire Festival and more recently four outstanding young poets who emerged from the slam over the years were invited to perform at The Arts Alive Festival in South Africa. On Thursday 24 September, poets Roxanne 'Xapa' Mathazia, Batsirai Chigama, Tongai 'Outspoken' Makawa and Tinashe 'Mutumwapavi' Muchuri performed at Johannesburg's beautiful Alliance Francaise venue.

The House of Hunger Poetry Slam is a project supported by Pamberi Trust, an arts development organization based in Harare which runs development programmes for performing, literary and visual arts. Along with the Poetry Slam, it has created different platforms for artists, including Bocapa Xposure, a competition for young artists which is currently in its second season of 2009, and open-mike platforms for youth, gender (Sistaz Open Mic) and Storytelling.

The House of Hunger Poetry Slam has spread its wings to other parts of the country where it is helping to setup two other slams - "The Lounge" in Bulawayo and "Emerging Voices from the Midlands" at Midlands State University in Gweru. Both are welcomed in their cities as a much needed platform, and well supported by poets and audiences alike.

"The Poetry Slam has been a place of hope, tolerance, understanding, inspiration and creativity for Zimbabwean poets. This month the slam has embarked on a theme that focuses on the future of a country that we all love, the country we have all wept for, where we have nursed each others' wounds in the past and now move forward to working towards peace and justice," said projects officer Hector Rufaro Mugani, "let's be part of the rebirth of our beloved country . . . The Book Café gives a warm Zimbabwean welcome to all poets and poetry lovers on Saturday 3 October, from 2-5pm at the Fife Avenue shopping centre. Come hear the voices of rejuvenation and join the freedom train!"
