Like Music to Our Ears: Poetry Week 2013

in the Netherlands and Flanders

From 31 January through 6 February 2013 the Netherlands and Flanders are holding their very first Dutch-language week of poetry.

To celebrate bookstores nationwide will be giving away a free book of poetry with every purchase, a tradition that is already part of the annual Book Week, and which will continue as part of Poetry Week. This year’s ‘poetry present’ is Anna Enquist’s collection Een kooi van klank (A Cage of Sound), which fits nicely with the theme of Poetry Week 2013 – music. You can read a selection of these poems with English translations here on our website.

Longstanding poetry events like the Day of Poetry, the VSB Poetry Prize, and the Turing National Poetry Competition will all combine forces to make this a week to remember. This year’s Poetry Week will also mark the appointment of a new Poet Laureate, as current Poet Laureate Ramsey Nasr’s four-year term in office comes to an end. The week will close with a Poetry Ball in Amsterdam, which anyone is welcome to attend.

Poetry Week is a Dutch-Flemish collaboration between Poëzieclub, Poetry International, Stichting Lezen Vlaanderen, Stichting Lezen Nederland, Poëziecentrum, Boek.be and Stichting CPNB.

You can find a complete list of all the activities during Poetry Week on the official website.
