Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão

Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão was born in Lisbon in 1938. Not only a poet, she is also a playwright, fiction writer, translator and essayist.

Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão has written theatre reviews, worked with the Arts Faculty Theatre Group, and in 1964 she trained at the Porto Experimental theatre. She attended a seminar on the theatre of Adolfo Gutkin at the Gulbenkian in 1970. In 1974 she co-founded the group “Teatro Hoje” (Theatre Today), where she made her debut as a director with the play Marina Pineda by Garcia Lorca.

Through translations from German, English and French, she contributed towards the diffusion in Portugal of authors such as John Updike, Bertold Brecht, Antonin Artaud, Novalis and Anton Tchekov. In addition, she did some historical and literary research on Portugal in the 16th century. She has also been acclaimed for her translation of the Song of Songs, attributed to Solomon. Like other poets of her generation, Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão actively participated in the 'Poesia 61' movement, which revolutionised Portuguese poetic language. Since then she has embarked on a remarkable poetic journey, which has made her one of the leading voices of contemporary Portuguese poetry.
