Survivors
Have you ever stopped to think
About the future – long after you’re gone?
Many of them were born during,
Before and after disasters, and
Can’t distinguish between day and night.
Love and care are words from fiction
Whose pages are used to wrap
Vegetables from the market.

What do you expect of a young adult
Wielding an AK47 rifle at his father?
Demanding no rights
But declaring that he is that right.
His brothers left unwritten a history
Of vandalism and armed robberies,
Last-known occupation
Pick-pocketing from old people and rural visitors.

But they have an oral history of an uncle
Who died in a car accident
While fleeing from a police chase.
Today is their pre-occupation
With a bit of yesterday
That is visited once a year
When another innocent child has to die,
To keep the stolen grinding mill going.

Life is designed in such a way
That the bad survive longer than the good.
