A CART WITH A MARE
“Mattresses,
water tanks taken off the roof,
clothing,
blankets,
doors and windows pulled off their hinges,
pieces of cupboards,
dismantled beds,
school books and notebooks,
sheets of asbestos and tin,
baby carriages,
refrigerators
and gas canisters.

The women sat at the entrance to the house
and watched the cart rolling northward
to neighborhoods far from the bulldozers.”

Rafah, Gaza strip

Poet's Note: “A cart with a mare” is the title of a popular song from the 1950s. The poem is a citation from a report by Amira Hass in Haaretz, 17 May 2004.
