Harkaitz Cano (Lasarte, 1975) lives in the Spanish Basque Country, is a novelist and poet, and writes in Basque. He is considered one of the greatest writers of the region and has won numerous prizes. He debuted in 1994 as a poet, with the collection Kea behelainopean bezala (Like smoke in low-lying fog). He also studied law and works as a scriptwriter for radio and television and as a comic strip writer. As a literary translator, he has rendered works by Hanif Kureishi, Paul Auster and Allen Ginsberg into Basque. Cano often collaborates with artists from other disciplines, such as music and art (especially street art). His poems have a narrative quality and contain many detailed references to modern reality. Also evident in his work is an ongoing investigation into space, the (international) city life, the behavior of people, and the workings of (minority) language and identity.
